Oh Deer!

My dad and brother have been over at the house the past two days working on the roof and we are finally almost done!! Here is a picture of my broha and his awesome dirt line:

Mostly, this post is not about roofing, or remodeling, or even making anything pretty. It's more of a glory post about my husbee.

My Honeypie and I worked on the lower part of the roof until we ran out of shingles. We started driving to his parent's house two miles down the road (virilocal) and saw three cute little fawns running around in the dirt road. I said, "Oh, Hello!" because I talk to woodland creatures and farm animals like they understand me. Butterflies included. It's kind of a bad habit. There were barbed wire fences on either side of the road, but the fawns were too small to jump over them. One fawn succeeded in jumping safely through the wires on the south side of the road while fawn number two continued to run up ahead and the third tried to copy fawn number one on the north side of the road.

Fawn number three jumped successfully through the wires.

Except it kicked back and got it's hoof stuck.

Then it cried out like a little baby. Seriously. I thought there was a child nearby. Turns out baby deer make the same sounds as baby human. Except louder. I almost gagged. It was so sad! I was already grabbing my phone (for pictures) and opening my door while My Honeypie was putting the car in park in the middle of the road (hey, it's Missouri) and I was going to tell him he had to help it, but I think that was his intention because he kept saying, "I'll get it". So I kept quiet.

No, I didn't make My Honeypie move just so I could get a good picture--he's climbing over the fence in this picture--because as buff as he--is he couldn't pull the barbed wire apart.  Or he didn't want to get poked. I don't really know.

[caption id="attachment_251" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="Proof. "][/caption]

Then mama deer showed up and I said, "Oh cr*p!" I have this unnatural fear of wild animal mamas and their babies. I envision them all as a mother Grizzly with her cubs. Then I turned and saw a big brown cow under a tree across the road that I mistook for a moose and I really thought I might die right there. Anyway, My Honeypie said of mama deer, "I'm afraid she might charge me" which made my heart beat even faster and he kind of stood near fawn number three while we looked at mama deer. Then she ran off with fawn number two.

[caption id="attachment_250" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="You can see her...kind of...she's running away and blending in with the grass"][/caption]

I like to think I have some good qualities as a wife and one of them is multitasking; so I kept an eye on mama-could-turn-grizzly-deer and kept snapping pictures of the rescue.

[caption id="attachment_247" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="please don't bite?"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_245" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="He had to pick it up"][/caption]

As soon as he got the little thing to the above position it kicked itself free--sadly I did not get a picture. I was too busy freaking out and asking My Honeypie if he was okay and scanning the field for mama deer. Fawn number three ran off just fine without any outward signs of injury. Yay! Free the wild things!

I Can't Help Dreaming Just a Little Bit.

Thinking grossly in advance here...but one day we are going to build ourselves a porch! Yes! I love, love, love big, wide porches--wide is a must. You must have enough space to put out a couple of chairs or benches and be able to stretch out your feet without them falling off the edge. This isn't a big deal for me. I'm only 5 foot 2. but for those taller than I...well, let's just say the porch has to be wide. That is not a fat joke.

Here are some I love:

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="it's just so wide!"]cottage porch[/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="448" caption="cute furniture"]Enjoy the romantic wrap-around porch at Suite Elizabeth at the Victorian Mansion.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="410" caption="see, this porch is a bit small, but I love the corbels!"]front porch[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="wide!"][/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="360" caption="Indoor front porch. I *adore* this floor."][/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="358" caption="Now this is a little bit of what I want--a gorgeous porch with a sweet awesome pergola."][/caption]

So that's what I want: a wide front porch with a pergola attached. Possibly with a blue floor. Sigh.

Holla Holla

A special shout-out and huge thanks to the young men and their leaders in our ward!! They did a service project at the house last night and got a lot done. Thank you!! Holla holla. That means "thank you"...at least for today.

THANK YOU!!

and of course, THANK YOU to all of our family who sacrifice their time and energy to help out on our house. All the time! We've decided to wait to move in until the house is completely finished...which will be awhile. It has its pros and cons, but I'm still excited about this thing nonetheless.

We also need to think of a name to call our little home. The previous owners named the property "Good-Bye Acres." Like, wut? No. Horror movie name. No. I keep imagining coming across a bunch of tiny little headstones in our woods. No. No. No. Nonono!! So. We have some time to think about it. Any suggestions?

PS!
*UPDATE ON THE ROOF*

Shingles!!

Holla holla.

The Roof is on Fire!

Not literally. We got the rest of the plywood on the house last week before My Honeypie went to Youth Conference. We also ran out of nails for the nail gun and had to hammer the boards old school. I only hit my thumb once!! We asked a couple of people we know who do roofing jobs what it would cost for them to finish our roof. One was too busy with his other projects...and the other said, "I'm not suicidal." Sooo...it's us!

Yes, I was allowed up on this part of the roof. It's not like death if you get on it, which means I felt much more useful! and this way it got done slightly quicker than My Honeypie doing it all by himself. Now there isn't a bunch of water getting into the house!

My dad is back from work and was able to help My Honeypie put on the trim. We are hoping we can start the shingles by Saturday.

*Fingers crossed*

The rest of us started cleaning out construction debris from the top floor. Yay!
